INDOOR AIR QUALITY: RADON

Radon- Measurement, Mitigation and Forensic Audits.

ARC Geobac has staff certified by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) for both radon measurement and mitigation

Radon is an odourless, colourless, radioactive gas and is produced by the decay of uranium. Uranium occurs in rocks, soils and groundwater. Recently, Health Canada reduced the exposure concentration to Radon from 600 becquerels/m3 (Bq/m3) to 200 Bq/m3. Radon in indoor air is measured in the lowest level lived or occupied in the building over a period of time using a variety of measuring devices. ARC Geobac uses various devices, both short term for entry point identification and long term to assess exposure limits. Forensic audits of buildings are conducted to identify entry points and to develop mitigations strategies.

Radon in groundwater can also be a source of radon in the building where groundwater contacts a foundation or radon degases where the water is used for showers, sinks or washing machine. We also understand and can address radon mitigation for groundwater.

As radon mitigators, ARC Geobac considers three factors in designing mitigation systems: the source; the entry pathways and; the force that causes the radon the enter. Active depressurization systems are uniquely designed for each building to be effective and unobtrusive.
